Gas Fireplace Cleaning and Service Cost in Ontario
An annual gas fireplace service is priced on the appliance type, how accessible the burner and venting are, and whether parts such as a thermocouple, remote receiver or glass gasket need replacing.
Most gas fireplace no-heat calls in Ontario trace back to something small: dust in the pilot assembly, a tired thermocouple, a dead remote receiver, or a spider web in a burner orifice. An annual service is cheaper than the emergency call it prevents.
Below is what a service visit covers, what makes one visit cost more than another, and the point at which service becomes repair.
What an annual gas fireplace service covers
- Removing and cleaning the glass and renewing the gasket seal if needed
- Vacuuming and brushing the burner, pilot assembly and ember bed
- Resetting the log set to the manufacturer's layout
- Testing ignition, the safety valve, the thermopile output and the blower
- Checking the venting termination and clearances
- Reporting on flame appearance and anything showing wear
What changes the price
- Direct-vent, B-vent and ventless appliances each take different amounts of time
- Built-in units with tight surrounds are slower to access than freestanding stoves
- Heavily sooted glass and logs need extra cleaning
- Parts: thermocouples, thermopiles, receivers, gaskets and blowers are priced separately
- Multiple appliances in one home usually reduce the per-unit cost
When service becomes repair
If the fireplace lights and runs cleanly after cleaning, that is a service. If it will not light, will not stay lit, cycles off under load, or shows soot on the glass and wall, the visit becomes a diagnosis and repair.
