Ignition and flame sensing on Heat & Glo units

The single most common reason a fireplace stops working is a fault in the ignition or flame-sensing circuit. On standing-pilot appliances, a thermocouple or thermopile generates a small voltage that tells the gas valve the flame is present. As that component ages the output falls, and once it drops below the valve's threshold the appliance shuts down — often intermittently at first, which is why the fault can be hard to catch.

Intermittent-pilot and electronic-ignition Heat & Glo configurations behave differently. There the control module manages spark, valve timing and flame rectification, so a fault can present as repeated lockouts, a click with no ignition, or a burner that lights and drops out after a few seconds. Applying a standing-pilot procedure to an electronic unit misses the tests that matter, which is why we confirm the ignition architecture before we start.

Measured readings, not guesswork. We record what the sensing circuit is actually producing and compare it to the specification for that unit before recommending anything.

Venting, airflow and combustion quality

Combustion problems are frequently venting problems in disguise. A blocked cap, a crushed or disconnected flex vent, a nest in the intake or a deteriorated pipe section changes how the appliance draws, and the effect shows up as sooting, a lazy yellow flame, odours in the room or a unit that shuts itself down under load.

Ontario weather adds its own pressure. Freeze-thaw cycles work on masonry and terminations, ice and snow can obstruct low sidewall vents through winter, and long shoulder seasons give birds and small animals time to move into an unused flue. We inspect the full run rather than only the appliance, because a perfectly healthy Heat & Glo unit cannot compensate for a restricted vent.

Where combustion is off, we look at gas pressure, burner condition, air shutter or restrictor settings and the venting together. Incomplete combustion raises carbon monoxide output, so any unit showing those symptoms should be taken out of service until it has been checked.

Repair or replace: an honest assessment

We would rather tell you a repair is not worth the money than take it. If a Heat & Glo unit needs several expensive parts and is already near the end of its service life, we will say so and price both options.

Parts availability depends on the model and its age. For discontinued Heat & Glo components we look at approved equivalents where they exist and are safe to fit; where they do not, we explain the limitation rather than fitting something that was never intended for the appliance.

If replacement is the better route, we can quote a suitable new appliance and the installation work that goes with it, including venting changes, hearth or clearance requirements and finishing. You are never obliged to take that route, and the assessment is the same either way.

Maintenance keeps Heat & Glo equipment reliable

Annual service is the cheapest work we do and it prevents most of the expensive work. Cleaning the burner and pilot assembly, checking sensing components before they fail, verifying pressures, clearing the venting and testing safety devices takes a fraction of the time an emergency call does, and it is scheduled at your convenience rather than on the first cold night of the year.

Book heating appliances in late summer or early autumn, before the season begins. Pool heaters are best serviced at opening, and cooling equipment in spring. Units that run daily through winter benefit from more frequent attention, particularly where the home has pets, ongoing renovation dust or heavy wood use nearby.

Between visits, keep the intake and vent terminations clear, watch for changes in flame colour or sound, and replace remote and receiver batteries at the start of each season. Small changes are usually the first warning of something worth looking at.

Straightforward sensing-component replacements are often finished in under an hour. Valve, control board or blower work takes longer, and installations are scheduled separately.
